- Still from Liyana
The Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival, a five-day celebration of films made by first- and second-time filmmakers, will include a full day of films and activities geared to young cinephiles. Kids & Family Day takes place on Wednesday, August 21, at the Marquis theater in downtown Middlebury. Festivities kick off with a screening of Storm Boy, a live-action film based on a popular Australian children's book about a boy who rescues and raises an injured pelican. It stars Geoffrey Rush and is recommended for ages 8 and up. Next up is Liyana, for ages 10 and up, a hybrid documentary-animated film about five children in the African kingdom of Eswatini who turn past trauma into a fable. Tito and the Birds, an edgy, subversive animated Brazilian film, caps off the lineup. In Portugese with English subtitles, it's recommended for kids 12 and up. In addition to the screenings, the Marquis Café will offer a kids' menu and an array of board games on loan from local game shop Tinker and Smithy. Workshops that teach about Claymation and how to film a chase scene will give kids the opportunity to imagine themselves behind the movie camera.
